The electrocardiogram 102 years after Einthoven.

چکیده
In 2002, we celebrated in the Netherlands the 100th anniversary of Einthoven’s first publication on the electrocardiogram (ECG).1,2 During the past century, the ECG has become indispensable for rapid diagnosis and management of patients with a wide variety of cardiac diseases. As pointed out by Fisch,3 the ECG is an easily available, patient-friendly, noninvasive, inexpensive, and reproducible technique, without peer for the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia, cardiac arrhythmias, structural changes of the myocardium, drug effects, and electrolyte and metabolic disturbances. Twenty years ago, we reviewed the advances in electrocardiology at that time.4 Now, we would like to discuss new information that can be obtained from the “simple” 12-lead ECG. The limited number of words allowed in an editorial makes it impossible to discuss the ionic and cellular basis of the normal and abnormal ECG and to look at recent studies that used more sophisticated and complex noninvasive techniques to obtain information about the electrical activity of the heart. We will focus on 4 areas in which new information that is useful in our daily cardiology practice has become available.

In 1924, Willem Einthoven received the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine “for his discovery of the mechanism of the electrocardiogram.” His colleague Sir Thomas Lewis, regarded by many as another father of clinical electrocardiography, was born in 1881, 21 years after Einthoven, and it is said that Lewis could not understand not being awarded the Nobel Prize together with Einthoven, or eve...
متن کاملDerivation of the correct waveform of the human electrocardiogram by Willem Einthoven , 1890 – 1895 Paul Kligfield
In the period 1890 to 1895, Willem Einthoven greatly improved the quality of tracings that could be directly obtained with the capillary electrometer. He then introduced an ingenious correction for the poor frequency response of these instruments, using differential equations. This method allowed him to predict the correct form of the human electrocardiogram, as subsequently revealed by the new...

متن کاملThe patient U wave.
After having described the electrocardiogram in 1895 [1], Einthoven extended our notion of the ECG by mentioning the U wave in a later paper in the Lancet in 1912 [2]. Sandwiched between a paper on paratyphoid fever following meat poisoning and a paper on a ruptured kidney, Einthoven’s seminal paper ended in two brief sentences: ‘‘The method of electrocardiography is still a young plant. We may...
متن کاملCentennial of the string galvanometer and the electrocardiogram.
This article is a review of the history of the string galvanometer and of the electrocardiogram (ECG) on the occasion of the centennial of the instrument. Einthoven most likely developed the string galvanometer prior to 1901, the date of the first publication. The galvanometer made electrocardiography practical creating a new branch of medicine and even a new industry. In 1791 Galvani, in 1842 ...
